According to the FDA recall notice, Fresh Food Concepts, Inc. has recalled a number of its layer dip products because the avocado in the dips may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, an organism that may cause a number of health problems including “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, [and] abdominal pain and diarrhea.” Listeria monocytogenes is considered an especially destructive food-borne pathogen that results in death for 20-30% of infections, and it may cause serious and “fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”
